The Department of Learning Sciences in Georgia State University’s College of Education & Human Development invites applications for an Academic Professional position to join the program faculty in Deaf Studies beginning August 2023. This person’s responsibilities will include interpreting for faculty and students and ASL instruction.  We seek candidates who can contribute in meaningful ways to the mission and goals of the Deaf Studies Program and Department of Learning Sciences.  
Applicants with strong skills in American Sign Language to English and English to American Sign Language interpreting who can teach undergraduate courses in Deaf Studies, interpreting, and Deaf Education courses are encouraged to apply.
The Department of Learning Sciences at Georgia State is an interdisciplinary unit dedicated to improving the human condition through data-driven investigation of the learning process, effective design of innovative learning environments, and the development of learning science professionals. Learning Sciences offers high-quality academic programming in five areas: educational psychology, applied behavior analysis, deaf and hard of hearing, learning technologies, and special education. Our graduates pursue careers at universities, research labs, school systems, business and industry, government agencies, and more. With a growing number of Deaf faculty and staff, a need for a reliable interpreter is needed for the program’s future. We are looking for an interpreter who can take on two roles: teaching courses under our new and growing Deaf Studies Program and interpreting for our Deaf faculty and staff. Our faculty are committed to creating excellent inclusive and safe learning environments and working towards ensuring access to teaching and learning for all students. Our faculty and students are highly involved in community work both in and out of the classroom environment and maintaining involvement with our Deaf Community and stakeholders.

Responsibilities: The selected applicant can anticipate interpreting various meetings, recruitment events and classes for Deaf Studies Program Faculty and staff, teaching undergraduate courses in Deaf Studies, Interpreting, and Deaf Education, and providing service to the university and professional organizations.
Qualifications: Candidates should have skills in interpreting ASL and English and experience creating an effective American Sign Language-centered classroom environment for Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, and Interpreting students as well as demonstrated teaching ability, and strong methodological skills.


Successful candidates will have:
  • Terminal degree (Masters or higher) in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or related fields;
  • RID or BEI certification;
  • proficiency in ASL-English translation and English- ASL translation;
  • five or more years of interpreting experience;
  • two or more years of teaching experience (technology is a plus);
Duties:
  • be available as needed to facilitate communication with Department of Learning Science students, faculty and staff;
  • interpret college-wide, department, program, and research meetings;
  • teach a course load of approximately 2 courses per semester;
  • interpret for Deaf Studies courses as needed;
  • attend and interpret recruitment, workshop, professional development, Department and program social events as needed;
  • interpret Deaf Studies new student orientation events as needed;
  • Interpret Department of Learning Science graduation as needed;
  • Schedule team interpreters as needed.
