Job Description

Volunteer Guide

Are you interested in the connections between empowerment, art, and community healing? Do you want to be part of a larger group of educators passionate about sharing stories and learning how creativity has evolved over time?

The Saint Louis Art Museum will begin training a group of volunteer guides in the fall of2024. These guides will play an important role in helping our visitors engage with art in the Museum's galleries. Volunteer guides will welcome visitors and encourage dialogue. They will lead tours for school children, families, and adult groups. These guides will join a group of trained volunteers with extensive institutional knowledge who have welcomed visitors of all ages to the Saint Louis Art Museum for over 60 years.

The Museum's goal is to recruit guide applicants who will bring a diverse range of life experiences and perspectives to their roles. Ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal communication skills, an interest in engaging with diverse audiences, and a sincere desire to learn how to connect with our visitors through art-centered experiences. No prior knowledge of art or art history is required.

We plan to offer initial training on art interpretation, museum education, and cultural competence in a 12-week session with both virtual and in-person classes. The required in-person classes will take place once a week and will be offered on weekends and weekdays to accommodate a range of schedules. We intend to review applications on a rolling basis, with the goal of responding to all applicants by September 30, 2024.
