As a Director, Translational Medicine (TM), you will be a champion of Otsuka's culture and values and will support activities related to translational medicine and the clinical transition of assets from the discovery/early phase CNS pipeline. Under the guidance of the Sr. Director, TM, the Director's responsibilities include serving in the role of Translational Medicine Lead for discovery stage, preclinical and early phase CNS assets, to provide technical and scientific expertise in support of development plans. The Director TM also serves an essential role in driving interactions with Business Development (BD), the McQuade Center for Research and Development (MSRD) and other collaborative discovery affiliates to evaluate, support translational studies of pre-IND and early clinical phase assets. Other essential duties include the identification and deployment of emerging sciences, new technologies and capabilities to enable optimization of early phase decision-making for CNS assets.

You will report to the Senior Director, Translational Medicine (TM).

This position is based in Rockville, Maryland or Princeton, New Jersey. Otsuka maintains a hybrid work policy and travel is expected 20% of the time based on business needs. Remote options will be considered for US candidates.

Job Description:

  • Lead discovery and translational efforts related to CNS target identification, lead identification through IND and proof-of-concept.
  • Interact with internal and external groups to provide CNS translational expertise in the evaluation of molecular and biological targets, new compounds, as well as new formulation technologies.
  • Partner with internal and external research organizations to expand and facilitate progression/ development of discovery and early phase CNS compounds.
  • Represent TM in cross-functional as well as internal/external collaborations (BD, MSRD, etc.) on activities related to early phase target and asset identification.
  • Provide expert advice to internal discovery teams as well as external and early investment partners on go/no go decisions for CNS assets in lead optimization and early development.
  • Serve as the TM Lead for pre-clinical/discovery stage and early phase assets and provide technical, scientific expertise to development plans.
  • Provide TM expertise and interact with subject matter experts to support translational plans leading to go/no go decisions on discovery as well as early phase assets.
  • Provide support, lead or serve as an individual contributor to public/private partnerships in the pre-competitive space to promote advancement of capabilities of emerging translational medicine initiatives.
  • Interact through matrixed leadership with cross-functional disciplines to incorporate translational medicine, biomarker, genomics, digital technology and quantitative pharmacology activities into development plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or PhD in Pharmacology, Physiology/Biology (or a related area) with a minimum of 10 years of experience in a Translational Medicine group is required.
  • Must be able to apply scientific knowledge (in the areas specified above) to further the company's assets, anticipate and identify core problems, apply insightful analysis, and solve problems effectively.
  • Leadership experience related to Early Phase and Translational Medicine.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Clear, concise, and persuasive communication.
  • Flexibility to react rapidly to changing situations/environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Subject matter expertise across several CNS biomarkers, translational tools and technologies (e.g., PET, fMRI, EEG, behavioral and/or neuro-/psycho-physiological approaches).
  • Demonstrated discovery and early phase clinical development experience within the field of Neuropsychopharmacology.
  • Integrated working knowledge of translational medicine and its application/deployment to address GO/NOGO decisions in drug discovery, and early phase clinical development.
  • Detailed knowledge of the regulatory path for early phase assets and familiarity with the prevailing, contemporary regulatory guidance documents as applied to translational studies of early phase assets.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal effectiveness in working collaboratively across matrixed teams.
