We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to be responsible for providing expertise and knowledge, in the following areas: Underground (UG) rock mechanics; design and installation of ground support, rock mass monitoring; and, instrumentation.

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer located at the Bingham Canyon mine site,this site-based role will work an even roster rotation to support underground development and production stoping activities for the Kennecott Underground.

  • Working collaboratively with all operational and functional departments, you will be responsible for:
  • Ensuring safe and stable underground excavations in rock through proper rock mechanics design and monitoring;
  • Managing and maintaining quality control programs for: ground support (including shotcrete) and backfill;
  • Assisting in managing and maintaining relevant and up to dateGround Control Management PlanandMine Design;
  • Providing basic ground control training as required
  • Geotechnical mapping of underground development faces and logging of geotechnical core holes.
  • Assisting in managing and maintaining geotechnical monitoring instrumentation and systems including extensometers and seismic
  • Conducting regular inspections of underground excavations and other critical infrastructure
  • Analyzing relevant data to ascertain proper performance of designs and take action as required
  • Delivering internal and external status reports, summaries, analyses, warnings/bulletins, and directives as required by technical or regulatory demands
  • Assisting in maintaining an inventory of documents, geotechnical database, reports, and drawings
  • Being available to provide knowledge and service as required to resolve issues or address concerns related to geotechnical engineering
  • Expanding position-relevant knowledge and skills through continuing self-directed or employer-sponsored professional development

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Strong safety mindset
  • Bachelor's Degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant rock engineering experience
  • Knowledge of rock mechanics principles, monitoring methods and practices, and related data analysis
  • Knowledge of the design, support, and excavation methods of underground mine structures
  • Knowledge of specialized basic geotechnical software applications (RocSciencesuite)
  • Knowledge of underground mining methods and backfilling techniques
  • Basic knowledge of hydrogeology
  • Strong planning, organizational, management and communications skills
  • Knowledge of word processing, database, spreadsheet and basic financial information software
  • Experience working with 3D mine planning software such as Deswik, Vulcan (Maptek) and Geological software (Leapfrog)
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently in a results-oriented environment
  • Experience working with contractors and small geotechnical teams.
