THIS IS A TWO-YEAR TERM POSITION.

What your job will be like:

Jefferson Lab's Environmental Safety & Health division is seeking a Radiation Control Technician to provide radiological control support to Jefferson Lab staff by providing dosimetry, performing surveys, administering radiological work permits and providing radiological job coverage among many other tasks. We are open to filling this position at the Tech I or Tech II levels based on the candidate's skills and experience. Come and join our team!

In this role you will:

* Provide job coverage for radiological work, to include job planning, writing, administering, and enforcing radiation work permits and procedures.

* Post and maintain for radiological controls boundaries consistent with radiation survey data, engineering controls, and radiation work permits, and operating procedures on a site-wide basis.

* Source check, maintain, and operate all types of portable monitoring systems and instruments used by the Lab, (includes hand-held dose rate and contamination monitoring instruments, and portable spectroscopy, sampling or analytical equipment).

* Source check and operate fixed monitoring systems and instruments continuous air monitors. Retrieve data, interpret results, and take necessary actions to support regulatory requirements, and the ALARA philosophy.

* Operate radio-analytic detection equipment (portable and fixed high-resolution gamma spectroscopy systems and liquid scintillation analysis systems.

* Assist in performing environmental sampling of surface water, and soils. Analyze results for trending, and interpret and perform reporting as required to federal, state, and local agencies. Track the volumes and discharges of all sumps and outfalls.

* Respond to emergency situations including radioactive spills, personnel injuries in a radiological environment, fires, and abnormal personnel radiation doses.

* Issue personnel dosimetry and visitor dosimetry, verify training, and perform documentation. (TECH I's will do this after job performance sign-off)

* Provide training for Jefferson Lab personnel and users as necessary. (TECH I's will do this after job performance sign-off)

* Assist in tagging, posting and tracking of radioactive material site-wide (TECH I's will do this after job performance sign-off)

* Analyze radioactivity content of samples activities and evaluate results (TECH I's will do this under SME supervision)

* Perform routine and job specific radiation, contamination and airborne radioactivity survey (TECH I's will do this under senior supervision)

Qualifications We Require:

Education & Experience (TECH I):

* High School Diploma

* 2 Years relevant experience in radiation protection, or

* Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Education & Experience (TECH II):

* High School Diploma

* 5 Years relevant experience in radiation protection, or

* Equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (TECH I/TECH II):

* Familiarity with radiological controls principles and techniques.

* Familiarity with basic principles of health physics.

* Some experience with radioanalytical laboratory equipment (liquid scintillation counter, gamma spectrometers) and all common types of fixed/portable radiation instrument.

* Familiarity with DOE, NRC, or DOD radiation protection rules and regulations. Demonstrated ability to work independently.

* Familiarity with DOT shipping regulations.

Qualifications We Desire (TECH I/TECH II):

* Navy ELT experience, or RPT qualification through a NAVSEA or INPO training program is also preferred.
