Job Description- EHS Specialist

The Safety, Health & Environmental Coordinator is a member of the Sonoco-Chattanooga Safety & Environmental Team. This position provides EHS technical consulting support and leadership to the Chattanooga Mill, to ensure sustainable compliance and reduce the frequency and severity of occupational and environmental incidents.

How you will impact Sonoco

  • Provide leadership to help in the development, implementation and maintenance of procedures and programs designed to create a zero-incident culture.
  • Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations
  • Support to the Hazard Recognition & Control Processes that identify and control physical hazards through on-site inspections
  • Prepares studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies
  • Inspects organization facilities to detect existing or potential safety and environmental hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
  • Leads the investigation of safety and supports environmental incidents and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations
  • Works with the Safety Manager to track all activity for the facility related to lost work time, return to work initiatives, and restricted duty provision
  • Provides information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions
  • Provides tactical oversight of specific programs such as Mobile Equipment, Lock Out Tag Out, incident investigation, risk assessment and required medical surveillance programs
  • Keeps current on specific requirements imposed by governmental agencies through review of the current and/or proposed statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits
  • Maintains a working knowledge on the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and how they may impact the sites

What you need to succeed

  • Associate's Degree is in Occupational Health & Safety, Biology, Chemistry, or similar technical discipline with some heavy industry experience
  • Preferred: 1 - 3 years heavy industry experience
  • EHS experience in Manufacturing: planning and implementing Health & Safety programs in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with regulatory compliance, incident investigation, and safety engineering
  • Language Skills - Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to present training in a clear and understandable manner; able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Excellent organizational skills - able to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently as a part of a team
  • Computer Skills - knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software
  • Some weekend call duty and support for production outage.
