Job Summary

The Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) is responsible for promoting environmental stewardship and a safe workplace at UCSF while helping to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to occupational safety and the environment. Under the supervision of the Technical Operations Supervisor, Senior Hazardous Materials Technicians provide the following services to UCSF:

  • Hazardous chemical waste collection and disposal
  • Medical waste collection and disposal
  • Receipt of radioactive material
  • Radioactive waste collection and disposal
  • Controlled substance receipt and disposal
  • Radioactive contamination monitoring
  • Calibration of radiation survey meters
  • Emergency shower and eyewash testing
  • Fume hood testing

Department Description

The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) provides safety and compliance guidance to all UCSF operations and facilities, including activities across both the Campus and the Health System. Under formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), EH&S Fire Prevention staff perform plan review, construction inspections, existing building inspections and other work on behalf of OSFM and OSHPD, providing reviews and code enforcement on behalf of the agencies. Other EH&S staff provide expert consultation and other services related to bio-safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, workplace safety and ergonomics, industrial hygiene, environmental protection and spill response.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma (GED)
  • At least 1 year of experience working with hazardous materials.; or a bachelor's degree that includes appropriate coursework in the biological or physical sciences
  • Knowledge of how to safely work with hazardous materials
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to use Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Skills in basic mathematics including Algebra
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and the ability to wear appropriate personal protective clothing, including a full-face respirator is required
  • This is a 'critical' position; fingerprinting and a background check are required
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's license with a good driving record is required.
  • Incumbent is subject to DMV pull notice program.
  • Ability to work a swing shift
  • Ability to work during weekends and campus holidays as necessary to ensure coverage of EH&S activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Previous experience managing hazardous, medical, or radioactive waste

License/Certification

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's license with a good driving record is required
