Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our Privacy team as an Assistant Director of Compliance!

About the role

Symetra is seeking an Assistant Director Compliance - Privacy Office to join our Enterprise Compliance Department. The position will lead and oversee the Privacy function, its initiatives and responsibilities across the company as well as represent Corporate Compliance for various regulatory compliance projects. This role is critical in leading Symetra to establish, enhance, and maintain multiple privacy and compliance controls as well as reporting mechanisms. Strong working knowledge of privacy compliance matters and regulatory technicalities as it relates to a life insurance company will be important to undertake day-to-day activities.

What you will do

  • Lead a team dedicated to managing privacy risks, conducting impact assessments, investigating incidents, and remediating issues to uphold data privacy standards.
  • Interpret and apply privacy regulations, requirements, and industry best practices, aligning them with business partner priorities and technological initiatives.
  • Oversee product development, vendor solutions, and business movements across divisions, applying privacy regulatory compliance to guide stakeholders in mitigating privacy risks.
  • Evaluate applications, systems, and business processes to identify privacy concerns, designing solutions to bridge any gaps, thereby ensuring that privacy policies and customer expectations are consistently met.
  • Report on program performance by developing and maintaining key metrics and reporting systems, presenting findings to leaders across multiple stakeholder organizations.
  • Influence business partners to undertake necessary transformations and prioritize key privacy initiatives, ensuring that compliance controls are effectively implemented.
  • Develop and execute communication and training programs to enhance the understanding of customer protection controls within Technology Operations and Solutions, business units, and other support organizations.
  • Exhibit a deep understanding of privacy requirements and best practices, and apply this knowledge effectively to business practices and project implementations.
  • Manage a variety of Corporate Compliance projects and initiatives aimed at advancing the organization's regulatory compliance and adapting to regulatory changes.
  • Coordinate efforts to adhere to Artificial Intelligence-related regulations specific to the life insurance industry, including Colorado's Regulation 10-1-1 and the NAIC Model Bulletin on AI, supporting compliance among business partners.

Compensation

$110,300 - $183,800 annually plus eligibility for Company Annual Bonus

Who you are

  • High School diploma required
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and/or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in a leadership or managerial role for Privacy compliance, or a similar position with direct experience in regulatory compliance.
  • At least four years of experience in overseeing privacy compliance functions, including regulatory interpretation, conducting impact assessments, building controls, and other similar business processes.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with a proven ability to write clearly and analyze complex issues, while effectively simplifying them into actionable solutions for company leadership.
  • Demonstrated high level of personal integrity and confidentiality as well as an unwavering commitment to customers and partners.
  • Substantial experience and working knowledge of laws and trends in both U.S. and international privacy, policy, and compliance arenas, such as State Data Breach Notification and Protection laws, GLBA, CCPA, NAIC Model laws, HIPAA, etc.
  • Proven ability to conduct thorough privacy research, analysis, document findings in detail, and distill this information into concise, actionable advice to stakeholders.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Word.
