Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Alternative Assets Director!

About the role

The Alternative Assets Director will assist in the strategy, sourcing, modeling, evaluation, legal negotiation, execution, and monitoring of alternative assets for Symetra Investment Management's ("SIM") clients, and in particular, its affiliated life insurance clients. The investable universe is expected to include externally managed positions, such as private equity, private credit, secondaries, affordable housing tax credit funds, CLO equity and co-investments.

What you will do

  • Assist in creating/modifying the Alternative Assets strategy. Source, evaluate, execute and monitor alternative asset investment opportunities with a focus on risk/return, long-term return potential, diversification, capital/tax efficiency, and other client-specific considerations. Conduct manager due diligence, coordinating with other areas of SIM as appropriate. Develop/expand relationships with sourcing partners. Collaborate with legal and compliance teams on documentation. Present ideas to the Alternatives team supported by a well-developed investment thesis. Keep apprised of emerging industry trends and themes in alternative asset management and perform ad-hoc research projects as needed.
  • Conduct ongoing reporting and surveillance of investments and external managers, by participating in Advisory Boards and industry conferences. Monitor appropriate analyses for holdings. Maintain and improve repeatable processes for quantifying and reporting results as needed.
  • The Alternatives Director will interact with other members of the Symetra investment department including, legal, operations, accounting, reporting and compliance.

Compensation

Salary Range: $146,800 - $244,700 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who you are

  • A Bachelors level degree in finance, economics, accounting, mathematics or relevant field is required. CFA or MBA preferred.
  • 7+ years of related work experience is required. Alternative Assets, Private Equity and Private Credit.
  • Ability to provide quantitative/analytical and qualitative evidence to support an investment thesis.
  • Comfort dealing with uncertainty and risk, and ability to make investment decisions that are supported by rigorous analysis and communicated with strong conviction.
  • Strong understanding of investment concepts, coupled with intellectual curiosity.
  • High level of initiative and experience developing and implementing value added investment recommendations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small, collaborative team, while also communicating and interacting with a larger group of investment professionals.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills (both written and oral).
