Salary minimum: $60,000 depending on qualifications

The University of Minnesota Libraries invites applications for a collaborative and partnership-oriented Dentistry Liaison Librarian to join a team of health sciences librarians who work to advance the teaching, learning, and research initiatives of the University of Minnesota health sciences programs.

We welcome experienced librarians, librarians who are new to the field, and those with another advanced degree and relevant experience to apply. No prior knowledge of dentistry is required. We encourage applications from individuals with diverse educational and work experience, and we invite you to envision the way your unique background and perspective brings value to our organization. Our culture is one of continual on-the-job training and mentorship, support, and professional development.

The successful candidate will clearly articulate the connection between this position and their unique work, education, and lived experience, and they will bring a strong interest in growing and developing professionally as a health sciences librarian. They will serve as a key member of the Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) Education and Research Services team of nine librarians, reporting to the HSL Associate Director. The Dentistry Liaison Librarian will work closely with faculty, students, and staff in the School of Dentistry, and with colleagues in HSL and across the University Libraries system.

ENVIRONMENT

The Health Sciences Libraries, part of the University of Minnesota Libraries system, include the contemporary Health Sciences Library and the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine. Both libraries serve as anchors in the Health Sciences Education Center where they offer technology-rich spaces and state-of-the-art collections, supported by the deep expertise of our staff. Together, these resources position the Health Sciences Libraries as recognized partners with the University of Minnesota Academic Health Sciences, one of the nation's few comprehensive health sciences programs, encompassing medicine, nursing, dentistry, public health, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and allied health that span the Twin Cities, Duluth, and Rochester campuses. Collectively, the Academic Health Sciences enrolls 6,000 students and employs 2,400 faculty and 4,200 staff.

The University of Minnesota Libraries is recognized amongst its peers for the breadth and depth of its contemporary and special collections. The Libraries uses the liaison librarian model to provide deep subject expertise to support individual academic subject areas and also has functional specialists that support campus needs such as copyright, research data management and scholarly communication. The Health Sciences Libraries work to advance both the Academic Health Sciences and the broader mission of the University of Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota, set in the heart of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, is one of the nation's top research universities. It has a student population of 52,000 and advances over 200 graduate and professional programs.

The Twin Cities are home to a vibrant community that is reflected in their restaurants, sports teams, museums, parks, live music venues, storefronts, and theaters. The Health Sciences Libraries are centrally located on Twin Cities Campus, with access to nearby restaurants, open areas, museums, and an international airport. Downtown Saint Paul and Minneapolis can be easily accessed on light rail or other public transportation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Dentistry Liaison Librarian will apply their skill set to offer library-related expertise and services in alignment with the School of Dentistry's patient care, basic and clinical research, and dental education initiatives. Focus areas include the integration of evidence-based practice and health information literacy into the School of Dentistry curriculum, and support for research and scholarship, including systematic reviews and other information-related research processes.

The successful candidate will:

  • Actively engage with faculty, administrators, clinicians, and students to understand their teaching, learning, and research needs, and identify ways in which the libraries can meet those needs.
  • Develop and teach course-integrated instruction sessions, incorporating evidence-based practice, health literacy, and new technologies into the learning environment.
  • Provide library consultations for affiliated faculty, staff, and students that support their teaching, learning, and research needs.
  • Provide literature search results to School of Dentistry faculty and staff by request.
  • Work as a team to partner with researchers on evidence synthesis/systematic review projects.
  • Contribute to Health Sciences Libraries and broader University Libraries-wide projects and initiatives.

This position is a continuous-track appointment position and the successful candidate will be expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Continuous-track appointment librarians are evaluated and promoted on the basis of their fulfillment of the position expectations, their service to the Libraries, University and/or community, and their professional development and contribution. The successful candidate will receive annual professional development funds. Professional development leaves are also available to continuous appointment librarians.

This position offers flexible work options, with a current requirement of working two days onsite at the Health Sciences Library. It also requires occasional (4-6 times/year) work into the evenings in order to accommodate the School of Dentistry's teaching schedule.
