Overview

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist reports directly to the Global Director of EHS with responsibilities centered around management of crucial environmental health and safety protocols. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with Federal and State Agencies.

Responsibilities
    Create, implement, and coordinate safety programs to prevent or correct unsafe working conditions.
  • Manage the environmental programs including ensuring that proper and current Federal, State, Local of Pennsylvania permits, and licenses are maintained.
  • Understand Drinking and Wastewater rules for Local area and State of PA.
  • Design, plan, and implement procedures for the prevention, control and remediation of health hazards.
  • Manage the hazardous waste program including identifying and properly classifying all hazardous wastes, storage of the hazardous wastes, and arranging for timely removal of the wastes from the facility with licensed waste disposal companies.
  • Properly document hazardous waste disposal and maintain manifest logs. Inotiv is a Small Quantity Generator.
  • Prepare annual regulatory reports including OSHA 300/300A injury and illness reports.
  • Conduct monthly in-house EHS inspections of the facility, materials, and equipment in order to maintain compliance standards, including monthly fire extinguisher inspections.
  • Chair monthly safety committee meeting.
  • Advise procurement on ordering and maintaining PPE supplies; ensure proper PPE is being worn for all necessary tasks.
  • Manage respiratory protection program including medical surveillance.
  • Manage workers compensation claim cases including return-to-work procedure.
  • Provide new employee onboarding safety orientation.
  • Schedule new employee and annual refresher environmental, health, and safety training utilizing Safety Skills/knowledge & on-line training programs.
  • Maintain and update all emergency contact lists, emergency evacuation facility maps, safety posters, and schedule annual emergency response drills.
  • Maintain facility conditions in preparation for announced and unannounced compliance inspections as applicable by regulatory agencies such as OSHA. Interface with inspectors and legal representatives as needed.
  • Assist in the investigation process of any accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures.
  • Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to chemical and physical work hazards.
  • Follow safety guidelines for handling materials with the use of protective equipment as required.
  • Visit other sites and conduct safety audits as needed.
  • Handle any applicable confidential client information with care.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Required Qualifications/Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in EHS, environmental science, biology, chemistry, animal science, industrial hygiene or related field (will consider sufficient relevant experience in lieu of degree).
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local environmental and safety regulations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with different areas/levels
  • Strong presentation, communication, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Hazard recognition and ability to alleviate or minimize hazards.
  • Injury and Incident reduction and abatement skills.
  • A continuous improvement mindset and able to influence and bring people onboard to ideas for improvement.
  • Proficient use of PC-based application (MS Office, on-line training software, EPA and OSHA regulatory packages).
  • Travel Required - 15-20%
  • Must be able to work around / near animals in a limited capacity and follow sterile entry procedures
  • TB testing and titer testing, proof of immunity
  • Must be able lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a lab environment.
  • 3+ years of related experience in environmental, health, & safety.
  • Farming and/or other livestock/animal related skillsets.

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
