ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

UC San Diego is hiring a temporary 3rd Shift Sr Building Maintenance Worker to support aquarium operations.

  • Duration: This role is anticipated to last 5-6 months
  • Compensation and Benefits: $23.43 per hour. Eligible for Mid-Level Benefits including medical plans, paid holidays, and vacation/sick leave.
  • Work Schedule: Nights, Tuesday - Saturday 10:30P - 7:00A
  • Location: 100% on-site on campus in La Jolla.
DESCRIPTION
  • Under the direction of the Director of Facilities and the Sr Building Maintenance Worker, the main responsibilities of the role include; conducting regular rounds of the aquarium life support systems, routine preventative maintenance in all areas of the facility, promptly addressing system issues, installing and repairing plumbing fixtures and mechanical systems, and other general facilities maintenance tasks. - The Senior BMW acts as the first point of contact in responding to emergencies and alarms after hours, and ensures the overall safety, health, and comfort of all aquarium guests and staff members by following all published response procedures.
  • This requires high expertise and attention to detail to ensure the facility is always in optimal working condition and good judgment in responding to an emergency.
  • The Senior BMW will conduct maintenance tasks on various facility systems including; HVAC systems, electrical systems, lighting systems, transformers, ballasts, windows, doors, ventilation fans, and minor roofing repairs.
  • These tasks require skill and expertise to ensure that all systems and fixtures function correctly. In addition to maintaining the various systems and fixtures, the Senior BMW may collaborate with the Environmental Services team to provide internal customer service to aquarium staff and ensure that the facility is clean and presentable. -Under the direction of the Director of Facilities and in collaboration with the Facilities/Environmental Services Supervisor, the Senior BMW may be asked to perform tasks such as: power washing designated areas, cleaning vents and elevators, cleaning carpets, and collecting recyclables. This work may include the use of a man-lift to reach high surfaces, which can not be done during normal aquarium operating hours.
  • As part of the after hours team, the Senior BMW may also be asked to support night-time public events. This could involve cleaning before and after events, as well as moving and restoring exhibit components to allow for event set up. This requires collaboration and coordination with other units, such as the Special Events team, to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
  • The Senior BMW will also be one of the contacts for early morning vendors coming to the aquarium, and will need to keep up on all communication within the unit to ensure that they are up to date on major projects. Collaboration within the unit and across units is essential for all roles at the aquarium, and the Senior BMW will need to actively engage with the team to ensure a smooth transition between shifts.
  • The role of the Senior Building Maintenance Worker (3rd Shift) is crucial for ensuring the optimal functioning of the aquarium, and this position plays a key role in the after hours operations.
  • The combination of Facilities Maintenance and Environmental Services, and the support of the aquariums Life Support Systems, is key to the smooth operation of the aquarium and the health and safety of the animals in our care, the guests that we serve, and the staff that we work with.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years of experience in the performance of semi-skilled building maintenance work, or one (1) year as a Building Maintenance Worker; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • California drivers license; ability to drive department truck or personal vehicle.
  • Experience in maintenance work in a Zoo, Aquarium, or equivalent public facility.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude; knowledge of building maintenance

  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks without close supervision.

  • Demonstrated plumbing and water system maintenance, repair, and installation skills.

  • Carpentry skills; ability to use hand and power tools.

  • Proven general knowledge of wiring and installation of electrical components.

  • Proven knowledge of custodial and cleaning procedures, and custodial equipment and supplies.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all safety procedures to be followed when working in a maintenance/custodial setting.

  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Proven ability to work in a service-oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and sound judgment.

  • California drivers license; ability to drive department vehicles.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe handling and disposal techniques for refrigerant chemicals and parts.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work a prearranged day, swing, or graveyard shift, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Must be physically able to perform essential functions of the position.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $48,922 - $63,266 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.43 - $30.30

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
