Major Gifts Officer - UPMC and School of Medicine



The Division of Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement (PAE) at the University of Pittsburgh is dedicated to fostering meaningful relationships with donors, alumni, and stakeholders, supporting the University's mission in education, research, and healthcare. We invite you to become a pivotal part of our team as the Major Gifts Officer

In this role, you will serve as the integral part within PAE's Medical and Health Sciences department, reporting to the Senior Director of Development, Academic& Clinical Medicine. As our Major Gifts Officer, you will play a crucial role in our fundraising efforts by directly engaging with former residents and fellow alumni of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine. Your primary focus will be on securing major gifts from UPMC former trainees who have the capacity to donate $100,000 or more. You'll build and maintain a diverse and sustainable portfolio, ensuring that our development goals are met.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 125-150 major gift prospects, submit 15 major gift proposals and achieve a fundraising goal of $1 million.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors through meetings, calls, and correspondence to increase contributions.
  • Develop long-term relationships based on a deep understanding of donors' interests, passions, and values.
  • Collaborate closely with departmental leadership, faculty, and colleagues.
  • Regularly visit prospects across the United States, leveraging both in-person and virtual communication.
  • Utilize excellent written and oral communication skills to build rapport with current and future donors.
  • Convey fundraising priorities related to UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Support multiple departments, faculty, and staff in their fundraising efforts.

Job Summary

Plans, implements, and manages fundraising programs for assigned area of responsibility; develops proposals and coordinates fundraising efforts within the department; and identifies, cultivates, stewards, and solicits current and potential donors. Collaborates with executive leadership, leadership, and faculty on strategic initiatives and campaign management. Crafts major donor recognition collateral and recruits and leads volunteer solicitors.


Essential Functions
  • Ability to travel for prospect visits in differing locations across the United States.
  • Use of telephone and personal computer/tablet.
  • Ability to attend meetings in a variety of locations on and off campus.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively using verbal and written communications.

Physical Effort

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. May be required to move objects up to 25 pounds occasionally. Must be able to travel.
