Job Summary

Electricians repair, maintain and install electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, wiring, switches, and alarm systems; locate and determine electrical malfunctions using various test instruments such as an ammeter, voltmeter, and test lamp; repair malfunctions by such methods as replacing burnt-out elements and fuses, bypassing or replacing defective wiring, filing switch contact points, and cleaning or rewiring motors; test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency; install fixtures, motors, and other electrical equipment; make various adjustments to electrical equipment as necessary; inspect circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding, repair or rewire system according to building codes and safety regulations; may plan layout and wire new or remodeled installations; and instruct or lead semi-skilled or unskilled assistants.

Required Qualifications

Experience:

  • Completion of a four-year electrician apprenticeship program or equivalent education.
  • Minimum three to five years' experience as a journey-level electrician in a hospital or commercial high-rise setting.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and the ability to drive a University truck or other light vehicle in the course of job duties.
  • Completion of a certified apprenticeship program or equivalent education and experience.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Knowledge of:
  • All aspects of the electrical trade and related codes sufficient to perform work assigned, and evaluate progress to ensure that work assignments meet stated standards.
  • Construction specifications, technical drawings, construction methodology, construction scheduling techniques, safety requirements and codes specific to the Electrician trade to prepare work scopes, schedules, address project delays or disruptions and to bring closure within stated timeframes and guidelines.
  • Basic electrical theory including AC/DC systems applications, protective relaying and materials equipment and tools of the Electrician's trade.
  • Skill in working with both digital and analog electrical devices/systems (i.e. programmable controllers, logic control devices) and ability to work on medium and/or low voltage electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 72, NEC, and CEC, Occupational Safety and Health Administration general safety rules, equipment, and California Administrative Codes including Titles 19 22, and 24, ADA, The Joint Commission, Dept. Public Health, and OSHPD that may affect projects, their projected estimated costs or personnel.
  • Various power distribution equipment, auxiliary equipment and motor control systems.
  • Electrical standards and national, state and local building, fire and mechanical codes. Understanding of OSHA standards

Ability to:
  • Assist in the troubleshooting and repairing of electrical systems and equipment for malfunctions, signs of damage, deterioration, or adjustment.
  • Use a variety of power or hand tools and electronic testing equipment.
  • Read work project specifications, blue prints, and technical trade related manuals, circuit diagrams and written specifications
  • Prioritize assignments; organize work assignments, and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Exercise sound time management skills and control of projects and work proactively to mitigate complications that may jeopardize deadlines.
  • Stand, crawl, walk, stoop, push, pull, lift and lower objects up to 50 lbs. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in wet, humid weather and fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures.
  • Work under adverse situations and conditions e.g. dirty noisy etc.
  • Work overtime and weekends or alternate shifts as needed.
  • Speak clear and in a concise manner to obtain and convey accurate information in group settings and in one-on-one situations.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude to deal effectively with clients and co-workers and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the UCSF community, vendors, and other outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated skill in assisting and speaking with persons of various ages, socio-economic, cultural and/or education backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate strong skill and experience with diagnosing electrical system malfunctions.
  • Problem solving skills and sound judgment
  • Understand job safety on the work site in the use of ladders and scaffolding
  • Communicate clearly, verbally and written
  • Lift up to 50 lbs., use ladders, climb scaffold, bend, stoop, crawl and walk for extended periods.
  • Work weekends, holidays, respond to emergencies when contacted and work vacation relief on other shifts if needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of PC and PC compatible computers utilizing MS Office, Outlook, Excel and computerized maintenance system (Maximo) and the ability to program panels with manufacturer's supplied software.
  • Possession of a current State of California Electrician Certification, Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures
  • University and/or Medical Center environment experience

License/Certification

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and the ability to drive a University truck or other light vehicle in the course of job duties.
  • Completion of a certified apprenticeship program or equivalent education and experience.
