Job Description

WHO WE ARE:

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cutting-edge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. We partner with volunteers to accomplish our work. Staff members engage volunteers through effective and timely communications, facilitating meaningful opportunities, and continually seeking and providing feedback for reciprocal growth and learning.

The Senior Director, External Stakeholders, has a strategic leadership role on the Healthcare Access (HCA) team. Reporting to the Vice President, Healthcare Access, the Senior Director of External Stakeholders will lead the team's effort to develop targeted national organizational relationships and partnerships including, but not limited to, national provider organizations, healthcare systems, and can influence the changing journey of MS. Additionally, this position will provide leadership, management, and strategic direction for the stakeholder engagement team. The Senior Director also serves as a strategic partner for the HCA team and cross-functionally within the organization in creating and evolving best practices of mission-driven outreach and impact strategy

Essential Functions / Responsibility

Develop and execute engagement strategy and plan to cultivate relationships with national health care stakeholder groups to advance the healthcare access team's strategic goals (40%)

  • Identify key external stakeholders and strategic opportunities for engagement to advance the Society's strategic goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders in the healthcare system, including health care provider organizations, health insurance companies, physicians and medical groups, clinical practice setting bodies, and regulatory bodies as appropriate to develop collaborative partnerships with them.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistency in advancing Society priorities across the healthcare system.
  • Monitor and analyze trends in stakeholder sentiment, providing insights to inform the work of the healthcare access and advocacy team.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and other communications materials to external audiences.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Society's Advocacy and Healthcare Access team to advance the Society's operational goals.
  • Represent the Society at external events, conferences, and other external engagements.
  • Some international travel and meetings outside standard business hours will be required.

Staff supervision (20%)

  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding and management of direct reports including the Director of Healthcare Stakeholder Engagement and the Director of Provider relations.
  • Provider supervisory support for direct reports, including regular 1:1 check-ins and team meetings, provide feedback and guidance to ensure staff are supported in their roles and the organizational priorities, cultural values, operating principles, and strategies are clear.
  • Ensure staff have the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to perform all elements of job duties as well as provide opportunities for professional development to promote career growth.

Leadership (40%)

  • Play an active part in developing a cohesive team approach to support the effective delivery of both regional and national stakeholder engagement activity through the regional healthcare stakeholder team, and colleagues that specialize in provider and payor engagement.
  • Serve as a member of the Healthcare Access leadership and management team.
  • Provides advice, support, and information to the Advocacy and Healthcare Access leadership team on developing trends and strategies to developing collaborative partnerships with national and sector-based organizations, building trust, and building influence across the healthcare system.
  • Work closely with colleagues in Community Engagement, Corporate Engagement and with colleagues across the Society to identify new and existing engagement opportunities and ensure that external engagement activity and policies are coordinated and consistent.
  • Identify synergies between partnerships, national, sector-focused, and regional outreach activity to identify and maximize opportunities to develop trust and influence with partners and stakeholders

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience in the non-profit and healthcare industries.
  • Substantial familiarity with non-profit and healthcare industries.
  • Experience in a nonprofit is a plus.
  • A demonstrated leader with professional credibility, and ability to collaborate and cultivate relationships with internal and external constituents, and to represent the Society externally.
  • Ability to apply professional discretion and judgment to sensitive situations involving a diverse set of stakeholders with competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal, emotional intelligence, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Technical/Other:

  • Commitment to the mission, vision, cultural values, and expectations of the National MS Society
  • Position will be required to drive/travel on Society business. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation. The Society does run motor vehicle checks for all positions which require driving and the applicant must meet the Society guidelines.

Compensation/Benefits Information:

Estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $82,000- $100,000 based on our average compensation schedule. Final offers will be based on candidategeographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.
