Construction Crew Leader (Repairs)

AmeriCorps National members serve the community in direct service and capacity building activities.

What will you do?

The construction crew leader repairs plays an integral part in building and repairing homes. This position will focus on home repair construction aspects of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County operations The home repair program is designed to help preserve affordable homeownership and assist homeowners to live in healthy, safe, and accessible homes. Types of repairs include critical repairs (roof, HVAC, and plumbing), accessibility modifications (wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and handrails), interior and exterior work (porch or deck, painting, patching, minor repairs).

  • Typically serve Tuesday - Saturday on the build site.
  • Assist with all aspects of hands-on construction tasks including, but not limited to, demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping.
  • Projects may include new construction, rehabilitation, critical home repair and weatherization projects.
  • Lead small groups of volunteers and facilitate safe and positive experiences for everyone working on site.
  • Maintain site safety by adhering to Habitat construction safety policies, modeling best practices and guidelines, volunteer education and site monitoring.
This position will focus on home repair aspects of Habitat affiliate operations.

  • Activities and attractions: Beaches and the Atlantic coast are 2.5 hours to the east, and the Blue Ridge mountains are 3 hours to the west! Raleigh and Durham, NC are within a 20-30-minute drive of our office and both offer a plethora of city amenities.
  • Unique projects: We had our first real experience with a total home makeover last year in Hillsborough, NC. What started out as a wheelchair ramp installation, quickly segued into more serious repairs as structural issues were discovered upon closer inspection. A 2-day project ended up taking 6 months. We've discovered that more and more Orange County residents, especially seniors who are aging-in-place, are finding themselves in need of more substantial, critical repairs. We are aiming to increase these efforts, so that no further families get displaced within our service area.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident at least 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED.
