Primary Purpose

Assists physicians and nursing staff in the care and treatment of Emergency Department patients under the direction of Registered Nurse. Maintains continuous collection of data on the status of the patients and ensures the comfort and safety of patients.

Education

*None.

Experience

*Must have one (1) year of experience as an EMT-Paramedic in a MICU environment.

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

*May have equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of state experience.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

*Must be licensed as an EMT-Paramedic in the State of Texas.

*Must have current healthcare provider CPR certification from one of the following:

-American Heart Association

-American Red Cross Rescuer

-Military Training Network

*Must have current Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification on hire or placement in role. Certification must be from one of the following:

-American Heart Association

-American Red Cross

-Military Training Network

Responsibilities

1.Performs specified patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse to ensure optimal care for patients. The activities may include collection of urine specimens (routine and clean-catch); performing lab procedures (i.e. pregnancy tests); performing phlebotomy to include blood glucose determination and hemocue; performing 12-lead EKG's, applying cardiac monitor and pulse oximeter; and taking and recording vital signs, in accordance with the provision of patient centered/patient valued care, while providing optimal care for patients and their families.

2.Performs specified patient care activities under the direction of the Registered Nurse to ensure optimal care for patients. The activities may include obtaining blood samples and urinary catheter insertion, etc., as directed.

3.Documents observations, results, and patient care activities in the medical record. Communicates observations and results to the Registered Nurse.

4.Assists with cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed to ensure timely patient care.

5.Assists with wound care, suture tray set-up and simple dressings as directed by physician or nurse to ensure patient needs are met.

6.Assists patients with activities of daily living, comfort and safety measures to ensure patient care.

7.Transports patients to other care/diagnostic areas ensuring that patients arrive safely. Monitors patients during transport, as necessary.

8.Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

9.Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Paramedic by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, and/or maintaining certification/licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.

10.Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Emergency Services Department. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
