Position Summary
The phlebotomist performs specimen collection including venous, capillary, and arterial puncture as well as the collection/handling of other bodily fluids such as urine, stool, sputum, nasopharyngeal, and other various swabs. The phlebotomist must handle high-pressure situations in a calm manner. The phlebotomist is responsible for accurate specimen labeling, ensuring that orders are correct, and ensuring specimens are of the highest quality by following all laboratory procedures and policies.  The phlebotomist provides outstanding customer service in a compassionate manner to patients, visitors, providers, coworkers, and other hospital staff.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Always Identifies patient with 2 identifiers and checks the tests to be drawn against the physician’s orders for accuracy, and follows up any questions or discrepancies.
  • Always performs all blood collections (i.e., venous, arterial, and capillary) accurately with rarely a need to recollect a patient’s specimen; thoroughly explains procedures, and protects patient’s privacy.
  • After Draw, labels all tubes within sight of the patient, verifies tubes are correctly labeled.
  • Always contacts/consults with appropriate personnel when difficulties are encountered in drawing.
  • Thoroughly washes hands between procedures, patients, and throughout the shift; follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis in the use of all equipment and instruments and strictly adheres to the institution’s infection control procedures.
  • Records the need for ordering supplies and ensures that proper supplies are on hand at all times in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Performs EKG tracings on in and out patients as ordered by the Medical Staff.
  • Performs venipunctures, finger punctures, and arterial punctures with the knowledge and skill necessary for age specific service; anticipates and answers patient questions and needs based on age.
  • Completes DOT training and performs collection of Drug Screen and Breath Alcohol testing.
  • Answers the telephone in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Greets patients and visitors at the reception window with a respectful, helpful manner, and a smile.
  • Uses AIDET to provide outstanding, compassionate service to patients.
  • Always has a positive attitude when approaching tasks or during interactions with others.
  • Works in high stress situations with professionalism and makes sound judgement decisions based on education and experience.
  • Faxes reports as necessary.
  • Maintains competency with the EPIC computer system.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and functional working environment.  Is able to troubleshoot systems should problems arise. Uses supplies and patient care items cost effectively.
  • Teaches students phlebotomy techniques and processes.
  • Teaches and mentors new laboratory staff so they develop confidence and competence.
  • Uses down time to the laboratory’s advantage by stocking or seeking our work to be done.
  • Finds areas for improvement in the laboratory and reports ideas to lab management.
  • Responses changes to workflow and process in the laboratory and helps to implement the changes.
  • Always follows laboratory safety regulations such as wearing required PPE and following protocols such as no cell phone usage in the clinical workspaces.
  • Maintains annual competency and mandatory education based on accreditation and regulatory agencies requirements.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education:    
  • High School Graduate

Qualifications:
  • Excellent manual dexterity and ability to follow directions meticulously.
  • Ability to work with patients, staff, and the public with courtesy and professionalism is required.
  • Some Phlebotomy experience strongly preferred.
 
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • The ideal candidate must be able to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work accurately and effectively in oral and written directions and communication.
  • Enjoys working with people and works cooperatively with other hospital staff.
  • Physical and intellectual capacity to carry out treatment programs and documentation as required by the position.
  • Ability to stand for periods of time while setting up equipment, assisting in therapy of patients. 
  • Constant kneeling, stooping, bending, twisting and occasional need to lift patients
  • Medium Lifting, generally lifting not more than 50 lbs. maximum with assistance, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
