This hybrid position requires two days per week in our Denver, CO office.

About you

You're a connector who puts people first and values the lasting partnerships you'll build. You're an active listener who cares about the stories people share and are energized by communication and collaboration. You love learning new things and are known for bringing innovative perspectives and questions to the table. You're deadline and results-driven, passionate about creating new processes, systems, and best practices that help your internal partners do their best work.

About this role:

We are seeking an experienced Technical Accounting Manager who is eager to be on the cutting edge of accounting issues for a fast-paced public company. Udemy continues to pursue rapid growth, and the Technical Accounting team plays a key role in improving existing process offerings and assessing the implications of business developments such as new product offerings and systems. This individual will have the opportunity to interact with many different groups both within and external to the company. This critical role will work on a wide variety of challenging projects, leverage existing and new systems, and be a key player on high-visibility initiatives.

What you'll be doing:
  • Research significant, complex, and non-routine transactions, including but not limited to areas such as revenue recognition, equity, stock-based compensation expense, business combinations, leasing, and capitalized internal-use software, and prepare corresponding policy memos and supporting documentation.
  • Oversee recurring monthly close activities, including accounting for stock-based compensation expense, capitalized internal-use software, equity transactions, and cloud computing arrangements.
  • Work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders across engineering, IT, corporate and revenue accounting, SEC reporting, internal audit, equity administration, real estate, and legal.
  • Assist in the preparation of recurring SEC reporting requirements under US GAAP, including preparation of financial statements and tieout support for footnote disclosures
  • Lead the adoption of new accounting pronouncements (such as ASU 2023-07-Segment Reporting), including the preparation of policy memos, implementation of new processes and systems, and communication with other stakeholders, in order to accurately account for the ensuing financial and operational impacts.
  • Participate in annual audit and quarterly review procedures performed by external auditors, including preparation of support items and responding to auditor questions.
  • Help implement and test a new cloud-based system used to account for capitalized internal-use software efforts.
  • Prepare support for statutory audits of international subsidiaries under local accounting standards.
  • Perform key internal control activities to be compliant with the requirements under Sarbanes-Oxley, and continuously assess the existing control environment for potential gaps and enhancements.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize existing processes and systems for better accuracy and efficiency.
What you'll have:
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in the accounting field, preferably in the technology or software-as-a-service (SaaS) industries.
  • 3+ years of experience in public accounting, preferably with a Big 4 firm.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and an active CPA license.
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP, including a propensity for research and the ability to apply technical expertise to business-specific facts and circumstances.
  • Experience with NetSuite, Microsoft Office (Excel and Word), and Google Workspace products (including Sheets, Docs, and Gmail). Familiar with other tools including Floqast, Equity Edge Online, Slack, Zoom, and Zip.
  • Balanced approach between attention to detail and risk-based analytical thinking; you are naturally curious and comfortable working "in the weeds," but can still think "big picture."
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-accounting partners.
  • Experience working on projects with cross-functional teams; you are able to influence others and provide coaching or mentorship when appropriate.
  • Strong understanding of effective internal control design, implementation, and operation.

We understand that not everyone will match each of the above qualifications. However, we also realize that everyone has unique experiences that can add value to our company. Even if you think your background might not perfectly align, we'd love to hear from you!
