Job Summary

We are recruiting a microscope builder for the UCSF Center for Advanced Light Microscopy. This candidate will design, adapt, and build advanced fluorescent light microscopes for the CALM, including light sheet, TIRF, and spinning disk microscopes. They will work closely with the CALM director and UCSF community to identify open avenues for microscope development and will adapt and build new microscopes to enable scientific advances for our community. In conjunction with the CALM director, they will also establish the software interface to control the microscopes and establish the computational resources to handle the large amounts of data generated by these microscopes. The candidate will also be involved in teaching and outreach to the microscopy community so must have experience teaching courses in microscopy and quantitative biology.

For this position, we are looking for candidates who hold a Bachelor's degree in Quantitative Biology or Biophysics and have extensive experience both building and using advanced light microscopes. Ph.D. in Quantitative Biology or Biophysics is highly preferred. We are looking for candidates who have had previous experience building light sheet microscopes (in particular snout-style lightsheet microscopes) and also have experience building other advanced light microscopes including spinning disk and TIRF microscopes. We want candidates with multiple years of experience in microscopy in either academia or industry following their graduate studies.

Department Description

The Center for Advanced Light Microscopy (CALM) is an umbrella core that includes a group of light microscopy cores that are managed by common staff. Together they provide access to state-of-art microscopes for use by the UCSF community and serve over 400 scientists a year.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Quantitative Biology or Biophysics or related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Extensive experience using and building advanced light microscopes
  • Minimum 3 years of microscopy experience in academic or industry
  • Previous experience building light sheet microscopes (in particular snout-style lightsheet microscopes) and direct experience building other advanced light microscopes including spinning disk and TIRF microscopes

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Quantitative Biology or Biophysics or related field
  • Experience with integrating software (particularly micromanager) and hardware for microscope control
  • Experience with terabyte/petabyte data management
