POSITION SUMMARY

The Therapist is responsible for coordinating mental health care services for American Indian clients in Los Angeles County. They will provide assessment and counseling/therapy to eligible children, youth, and adults as a member of a treatment team. The Therapist identifies needs and coordinates sessions with clients on one-to-one therapeutic counseling regarding mental health or substance abuse issues. The Therapist will be a part of a unique multi-disciplinary team who works collaboratively with other treatment team members, other UAII service providers, and community partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the Therapist will:

  • Conduct program intakes and psychosocial assessments
  • Provide individual counseling and therapy using evidence-based interventions
  • Facilitate educational group sessions such as parenting classes and support groups
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed/required
  • Develop treatment plans
  • Provide individual/family in-home visits for counseling services to children, youth, and adults with a range of psychological, emotional, and behavioral problems
  • Partner with Case Coordinator to obtain resources and referrals for the client to sustain the client's involvement in center programs/treatment
  • Maintain aftercare follow-up and support/assistance to clients completing center programs/treatment
  • Partner in case planning with other center clinicians, consulting specialists, and representatives from schools, DCFS, and other jurisdictions as required or needed
  • Participate in Outpatient Staff meetings, Clinical Case Conferences, and other meetings as appropriate or assigned
  • Productivity - 65% of hours worked each week must be billable productivity. For a 40-hour workweek, the billable productivity requirement is 26 hours
  • Able to submit all completed paperwork to supervisor within 24 hours of seeing client
  • Maintain client charts in a responsible manner, and meet all paperwork deadlines as required by DCFS, DMH and agency policy (e.g. complete case notes and discharge notes on a timely basis, etc.)
  • Arrange work schedule to benefit the center program and clients with the approval of Clinical Supervisor/Program Director
  • Comply with agency guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Keep Program Director well-informed regarding activities, pending issues, and potential problems

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:
  • MA in clinical psychology, MSW or Ph.D./Psy.D. in psychology from an accredited graduate program
  • Minimum one-year clinical experience working with multiple-problem families (e.g. unemployment, poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, etc.)
  • Minimum one-year clinical experience with children and families
Certifications:
  • License eligible required
  • California license preferred
  • Eligible for a registration number from the Board of Behavioral Sciences or waiver from the State
Confidentiality:
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client and personnel information adhering to HIPPA, professional codes of conduct, State of CA regulations, Privacy Act, and UAII policies and procedures
  • This position has access to sensitive information, and a breach in confidentiality will be grounds for disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination
Communication/ Interpersonal Skills:
  • Possess the ability to communicate with others in a courteous and professional manner
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in English
Technology Skills:
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Ability to use iPad
Other:
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise a high level of judgment, accept supervision, and exercise a high level of accuracy and organization
  • Available to work evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in training sessions relevant to the position
  • Available and willing to travel as needed, travel time can be between 25-40%
  • Maintain personal responsibility for ensuring timely completion of appropriate Continuing Education Units for Renewal of License.
POSITION PREFERENCES
  • Experience working with the American Indian/Alaskan Native community
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations, community groups, and performance-based government contracts.
  • Knowledge of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638)
  • Bilingual in Spanish or ASL fluency is not required, but preferred

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk frequently, sit, bend, twist, talk, and hear. There are prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, and reading, as well. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with staff and vendors.

Mental demands:There are several deadlines associated with this position. The employee must also multi-task and interact with various people on various and, at times, complex issues.
