Under the supervision of the Dean of Manufacturing, Construction, and Transportation Pathway or designee, assists in the instructional process by providing support in the Landscape Horticulture and Environmental Health programs. The position coordinates closely with the instructional program chair and department faculty regarding projects, students and support. Duties involving chemical reagent preparation are time-sensitive and shall be completed during specified time parameters. Assists in the learning process by providing professional services for the specific courses the Educational Assistant is assigned to. Work is generally diversified based on individual needs of the instructor and student. Judgment and analysis are required in making decisions within established procedures. Daily responsibilities are completed independently using established policies and general objectives with occasional supervisory contact for policy clarification or interpretation.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation of materials for different courses as required; assists in the administration of practical or written examinations; assists in the horticultural laboratory and in the operation of horticulture equipment.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts in either a classroom or horticultural laboratory, horticulture construction lab and/or outdoor landscape lab.
  • Maintains the grounds on campus that are under the oversight of the horticulture department including mowing, string trimming, edging, weed control, pruning, planting, mulching.
  • Maintains labs and greenhouses; maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; writes requisitions for equipment and/or materials.
  • Performs minor repairs and service work on landscape and horticulture equipment, light duty trucks and trailers, small engines and tractors; notifies service repair personnel of malfunctions and problems and facilitates sending larger repairs out for service.
  • Assemble and disassemble, move and maintain materials as needed such as, wood, concrete block, brick, stone, soil, mulch, wood chips, seed, plant material, etc.
  • Schedules lab time for students.
  • May assist in the correction and grading of student work papers or practical examinations as required or assigned; records results of papers or practical examinations
  • Prepares exhibits and demonstrations for class or lab presentations; set up greenhouse, landscape construction, tree care sites and other equipment related to the area of assignment.
  • Keeps inventories and other data pertaining to the department; prepares related reports as required.
  • Supervise and mentor student workers, providing guidance and support to ensure efficient completion of tasks and a positive work experience.
  • Participates in in-service training, workshops and other educational activities as required or assigned.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications

Compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation standards/requirements, as well as all MATC policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Minimum Education: Associate degree or higher with coursework in chemistry, biology, microbiology, botany, or horticulture
Required Minimum Experience: At least two (2) years of relevant work experience in laboratories and greenhouses
Certification and Licensing:
  • Pesticide Certification: Current Category 3.0 (Turf and Landscape) or must obtain within six (6) months of start date
  • Class A CDL at time of hire or able to obtain within six (6) months of start date
Preferred Education and Experience above the required minimums listed above:
Bachelor's degree or higher in related field and with at least three (3) or more years of comparable experience.

  • Knowledge of chemistry, chemical processes, microbiology, biology, plant science, calibration processes, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and greenhouse safety precautions and procedures.

  • Skill in operating and maintaining sensitive laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining specialized greenhouse equipment and operational systems.
  • Ability to coordinate work activities with instructors in the Environmental Health Department and Horticulture Department.
  • Familiarity with the instructional process and use of instructional media.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs., carry, and push up to 20 lbs. and ability pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb stairs and a ladder and maintain balance.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, hear and speak.
  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: 50% of time spent sitting, 25% of time standing, and 25% of time walking.
Supplemental Information

Start date: This position supports the Manufacturing, Constructions and Transportation Pathway and is available to start immediately.

Hours/Location: This is a 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per work week, year round position.
Hours: M-F daytime hours with the ability for flexible evening work hours and occasional Saturdays as needed
Location: Mequon campus and off site locations
Modality will be in-person

Hourly Rate: Salary is listed to the midpoint of the salary range and is based on the 2023/2024 rates and are determined by years of experience credit and internal salary equity.
