The Position

The Genentech Corporate Law team is seeking to hire a Practice Group Leader, Senior Director & Associate General Counsel of the Manufacturing and Site Operations Law group who will report to Genentech's VP of Corporate Law. The Manufacturing and Site Operations Law group is responsible for providing legal advice to Genentech and Roche U.S. Pharma-affiliated sites and manufacturing operations, including the Pharma Technical Operations organization, Site Services, Environmental Health and Safety, Security, real estate/planning, research, and other site organizations and businesses.

This position is based onsite in South San Francisco, California. Remote option is not available.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key areas of oversight and responsibility of this Practice Group Leader role includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Practice Group Management:

  • Develops and drives a clear Practice Group vision and strategy, and may assist in developing strategy for other practice groups or the broader Legal Department.

  • Prioritizes work of the Practice Group, oversees workload and resource allocation, and supports direct reports on the prioritization of high value work and assignments.

  • Evolves legal practices as needed to meet changing business requirements, and are fully engaged, as co-owners, in business challenges, opportunities and outcomes. Guided by co-owning business outcomes, continuously seeks out opportunities to amplify the impact of the work that you and your team delivers.

  • Oversees legal services provided by members of the Manufacturing and Site Operations Law group, fostering and ensuring the delivery of high quality legal services, such as:

    • Advising on regulatory and compliance matters arising under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act related to manufacturing practices (cGMP) and quality system requirements;

    • Complex transactional issues in support of manufacturing supply and other agreements;

    • International trade legal counseling and compliance;

    • IACUC regulatory and compliance matters;

    • DEA and USDA compliance and enforcement;

    • Advising on complex EHS compliance and enforcement matters, including those arising under federal, California, and other state and local EHS laws and regulations on hazardous waste, hazardous materials, air emissions, wastewater, storm water, radioactive materials, process safety issues, and occupational safety and health;

    • Analyzing issues, developing strategy, and managing complex site remediation related matters and activities including state and federal Superfund sites;

    • Coordinating environmental due diligence activities and providing legal support for site acquisition and development, divestitures, and other real property related matters;

    • Providing legal counsel and strategic advice in support of land use matters, including the Genentech master site plan, coordinating and handling the legal support of all construction matters.

Corporate Law Leadership

  • Serves as a standing member of the Corporate Law Leadership Team (CLLT)

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of Corporate Law's longer term strategies and annual goals, as well as talent management and succession plans.

  • Cultivates a Corporate Law and broader Legal Department culture that reflects a strong commitment to employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, and collaboration.

  • Manages practice group budget, which includes overseeing outside counsel costs

Business Support

  • Fosters strong relationships with client groups as a strategic legal advisor to business leaders and actively co-owns business challenges, opportunities, and outcomes

  • Anticipates future needs, challenges and risks to the company and provides creative and innovative legal solutions, enabling business leaders to identify and implement legally sound and compliant means to achieve business objectives

  • Navigates through complexity by taking an enterprise view and designing strategies for complex problems

  • Participates in, leads and/or presents to various Company committees or other advisory, project or work teams in Genentech and Roche

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a JD law degree

  • Must be currently licensed to practice law, in good standing, in at least one U.S. state, and must be registered or currently eligible to register as a Registered In-House Counsel in California

  • 12+ years of legal experience, including counseling in relevant practice areas of: regulatory and compliance matters arising under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) and Quality System requirements, manufacturing and supply agreement transactions, environmental law, health and safety, land use, or related matters, and which ideally includes 5+ years of in-house experience in the pharmaceutical/life sciences/biotech industry

  • Experience leading and managing a team of attorneys and professional staff, ideally with 3+ years as a people manager with direct reports

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is$238,500 to 442,900. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
