Manager, Legal Operations

Role Summary:

We are seeking an inspired, business-minded leader with exceptional written and oral communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, who can influence and express ideas effectively in individual and group situations. The Manager, Legal Operations will manage key processes that are critical to the global operations of the Thomson Reuters General Counsel's Office, which has a staff of approximately 80 legal professionals around the world. The role will lead the Legal Operations function which includes a small staff of Legal Operations professionals. This role reports directly to Deputy General Counsel, Corporate & Securities.

The role will bring the leadership, knowledge, and expertise necessary to drive peak operational General Counsel's Office performance. The successful candidate will have an ability to develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders and core competencies in implementing policies, processes, and technologies to increase value to the company while driving efficiency and effectiveness. This role requires an individual with strong project management and team development skills.

About the Role

Major responsibilities & accountabilities in this role as Manager, Legal Operations will be:

  • Strategic Planning - Help the department set its annual & long-term goals to enable growth in alignment with our corporate strategy. Track to and report on these objectives.
  • Technology and Process - Evolve our technology and innovation roadmap, and develop or enhance maturity in all key areas - eBilling, workflow and document automation, self-service, knowledge management, document management, matter management, eSignature, generative AI tools etc. Examine existing processes and capture opportunities to make things simpler and automated. Ability to develop change management strategies to train, encourage, and support the staff to evolve our ways of working.
  • Outside Counsel and Legal Vendor Management - Partner with procurement, accounts payable and members of the General Counsel's Office to ensure value with our vendors, monitor forecasts vs. actuals, support process definition and training and all other aspects of vendor and outside counsel management, including reporting on all of these. Help to optimize processes to engage outside counsel and manage outside counsel spend.
  • Financial Planning and Analysis - Development and management of the General Counsel's Office annual operating plan, to include forecasting and accruals. Participate in strategic planning process to determine future headcount and spend by practice and geography. Works closely with Finance and HR as key stakeholders and partners.
  • Data & Analytics - Develop maturity in all areas of our use of data and analytics, especially within our Commercial practice group. Develop and refine dashboards for use by Chief Legal Officer and GCO Leadership Team.
  • Talent Management and Professional Development - Together with HR and Leadership team, support hiring and onboarding initiatives, performance evaluation cadence, etc.

About You
You're a fit for the role of Manager, Legal Operations, if your background includes:

  • Minimum of five years of recent and relevant experience as a business/operations manager. Experience in a law firm or corporate legal department preferred. This includes:
    • Managing the technology and the change management strategies that enable our corporate legal department to be more efficient (using the tools mentioned above)
    • Managing financial and budget processes in large corporate environment, including monthly and quarterly close procedures, quarterly forecasts and accruals, etc.
    • Managing outside counsel billing processes and eBilling
  • Deep experience with change management and agility practices
  • Bias toward speed and execution; must be able to keep pace with the exceptionally wide variety of operational tasks in this exciting role
  • Ability to influence and leverage relationships within and outside the General Counsel's Office
  • Results-oriented with a strong ability to execute on required deliverables and drive results; superior project management and organizational skills; ability to work with a high degree of independence and autonomy
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen
  • Executive presence, sound judgment, and discretion required

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required; JD not required.
  • Project management, change management and/or agility certifications are a plus.
