Job Description

Summary:

Advanced level of production welding. The job typically requires technical training in welding and 3+ years of related experience, or equivalent. May require special certification. Under limited supervision and minimal technical guidance, positions material to be welded and applies hand-eye coordination to achieve the desired weld. Materials welded may include steel, stainless, aluminum, or other alloys, and the methods may include gas welding, shielded metal arc, gas-tungsten arc, gas-metal arc or submerged arc. The variety of applications require an ability to plan, layout and perform diversified work, which may be characterized as short run production or job shop. Includes high pressure and code welding or other work involving critical safety and load requirements or welding where appearance is critical. Regulates heat and feed and may select electrodes, tips and rods. Works from more complex specifications, drawings, prints and welding symbols. May provide technical direction to others.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.
  • Conduct or supervise tests on raw materials or finished products in order to ensure their quality.
  • Design and direct the testing and/or control of processing procedures.
  • Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials.
  • Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives.
  • Monitor material performance and evaluate material deterioration.
  • Plan and implement laboratory operations for the purpose of developing material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards.
  • Review new product plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design objectives, such as strength, weight, heat resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost.
  • Solve problems in a number of engineering fields, such as mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil, nuclear and aerospace.
  • Supervise production and testing processes in industrial settings such as metal refining facilities, smelting or foundry operations, or non-metallic materials production operations.
  • Conduct training sessions on new material products, applications, or manufacturing methods for customers and their employees.
  • Design processing plants and equipment.
  • Guide technical staff engaged in developing materials for specific uses in projected products or devices.
  • Modify properties of metal alloys, using thermal and mechanical treatments.
  • Perform managerial functions such as preparing proposals and budgets, analyzing labor costs, and writing reports.
  • Plan and evaluate new projects, consulting with other engineers and corporate executives as necessary.
  • Remove metals from ores, and refine and alloy them to obtain useful metal.
  • Replicate the characteristics of materials and their components with computers.
  • Supervise the work of technologists, technicians and other engineers and scientists.
  • Sell and service metal products.
  • Teach in colleges and universities.
  • Write for technical magazines, journals, and trade association publications.
  • Sets-up and operates welding machines that join or bond components to fabricate metal products or assemblies.
  • Feeds work piece into welding machine to join or bond components.
  • Observes and listens to welding machine and its gauges to ensure welding process meets specifications.
  • Turns and presses controls, such as cranks, knobs, and buttons to adjust and activate welding process.
  • Operates welding machine to produce trial work pieces, used to examine and test.
  • Lays out, fits, or tacks work pieces together, using hand tools.
  • Examines metal product or assemblies to ensure specifications are met.
  • Tends auxiliary equipment used in welding process.
  • Tests products and records test results and operational data on specified forms.
  • Devises and builds fixtures used to bond components, during the welding process.
  • Cleans and maintains work pieces and welding machine parts, using hand tools and equipment.
  • Adds components, chemicals, and solutions to welding machine, using hand tools.
  • Stops and opens holding device on welding machine, using hand tools.
  • Positions and adjusts fixtures, attachments, or work pieces on machine, using hand tools.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Mechanical Aptitude
  • Computer experience in MS Excel and MS Word

Qualifications (Education, Training, Certification, Licenses, Experience):

  • Overall Experience - 3+ years of related experience, or equivalent.
  • Job Training - Technical training in welding and experience with welding equipment.
  • Education - Electrical Engineer or Metallurgy degree desired. Associates EET desirable. Welding certification preferred.
