What You'll Do
  • Analyzes, adjusts and operates equipment and system components associated with: steam & condensate system, compressed air system, natural gas system, Water Plant operations & portable water system, Sewage Plant operations, water treatment operations and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (including dehumidification) systems.
  • Analyzes, adjusts and operates instruments & controls, and computerized equipment associated with Utilities Systems and Equipment in a controlled and safe manner to obtain desired results.
  • Evaluates performance and condition of equipment by reviewing data, performing operational checks, and observing equipment.
  • Performs duties as Main Control Room Operator for the purpose of monitoring plant wide status of Utilities Systems and Equipment.
  • Reports deficiencies as they occur, and takes action for correction as may be warranted to maintain operation.
  • Works in a safe intelligent manner, using adequate forethought before taking action.
  • Keeps supervisor advised of operating conditions, status and requirements.
  • Performs analytical and/or chemical tests to determine characteristics of water, air emissions and sewage.
  • Follows controlled procedures and completes required reading assignments necessary for the safe and controlled operation of Utilities Systems and Equipment.
  • Performs duties as Boiler Operator, operating steam plant boilers, auxiliary equipment and controls.
  • Makes entries into logbooks and completes Round/Tour Sheets and checklists associated with shift operations activities.
  • Performs electric/gas meter reading activities.
  • Adheres to Safety and Security regulations.
  • Maintains assigned work locations and equipment to required standards.
  • Changes filters, cleans equipment, building equipment rooms, and adjacent outside areas as assigned.
  • Reports operating difficulties as they occur, expedites necessary corrective action to maintain operation.
  • Adheres to Environmental, Safety and Security regulations.
  • Follows Plant policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of applicable Federal, State, DOE, Corporate and Plant rules, regulations, Labor Agreements and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures.
  • Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department, through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 426.2), and Management.
  • Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
  • Understands a worker's right to stop work when they feel their own or other's personal safety is jeopardized.
  • Attends all required safety meetings and training. Offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment.
  • Performs operating assignments, preventive maintenance, customer service, utilizes special projects and equipment room cleaning.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • High School degree or GED equivalent
  • Must be able to perform all duties and functions outlined above.
  • Must meet initial employment requirements.
  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend applicable written and/or oral instructions.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the above job functions as determined by Medical Evaluation.
  • Must have three (3) years experience directly related to the operations currently being performed by the Utility Operators. The three (3) years experience can be proven by completion of a related vocational school, craft experience in a related field, utility operating experience at a municipal, commercial or industrial facility, or combination of the preceding. This experience includes the ability to analyze operating problems and take necessary corrective action to ensure safe operations of utilities systems.
  • Must attend and successfully complete Utilities Qualification Classes.
  • May be required to attend training classes and become certified and knowledgeable in the safe handling of hazardous waste, chemicals, substances and materials as determined by Training and Development Technologies, and Line Supervisor.
  • Must be capable of working alone.
  • Must be able to work in hot, cold and other inclement outdoor ambient conditions.
  • Must be knowledgeable of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) principles. Upon completion of site specific training, perform LOTOs proficiently to meet CNS Pantex program standards
  • Must be physically able to perform work while wearing Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and respirator as determined by Medical Evaluation.
  • Must be proficient in reading prints (utility maps).
  • Must have a valid State Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., 1 year maintenance-related experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
