Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for performing technical duties in the care of research animals in addition to day-to-day maintenance of assigned animals. Employees in this classification have no delegated supervisory responsibilities but may aid the supervisor in training new employees. Work consists of both direct and indirect contact with animals. Conditions may become stressful because of animal odors. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases, animals exposed to toxic materials, radioactive materials, bites, lacerations, etc. Conditions may become hazardous if animals become ill or are being treated with known toxic substances (i.e., carcinogens, microbial substances. etc). Weekend and holiday assignments on a rotational basis are expected.

About the Department and/or College
Our mission is to provide for the physical and psychological well-being of animals used in research and teaching. To aid investigators in obtaining and properly using these animals.
More specifically, the ACS serves to facilitate the use of animals in research and teaching at Texas Tech University while assuring compliance with all applicable regulations. ACS maintains responsibilities in animal procurement, animal housing and daily care, the provision of veterinary care, health surveillance and preventative care, assisting investigators and their staff with animal procedures, and the care, maintenance and replacement of equipment and facilities.
Major/Essential Functions
Required Qualifications
Completion of High School or equivalent in education and directly related working experience; successful completion of a recognized course in laboratory animal science. Also six months experience as a Laboratory Animal Assistant I or the equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
Laboratory animal experience or veterinary experience.
