Job Description:

Madison College is actively seeking a highly independent Senior Groundskeeper. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of landscape maintenance plans for all Madison College sites including trees, turf, shrubs, landscape beds, perennials, annuals, ornamental grasses, hardscape, parking lots, walks and drives and athletic areas. This position will also design and lead various landscape repair, renovation, and installation projects; and assist with snow removal, preventative maintenance on grounds equipment and additional duties as directed by Supervisor and Grounds Coordinator.

The Senior Groundskeeper reports directly to the Engineering Services/Operations Manager and may also direct work and receive assistance from student help.

This is a full-time, 52-weeks per year position, general working hours are Monday through Friday from 6:00am - 2:30pm.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Perform specialized landscape maintenance on all campus grounds.
  • Maintain the health of existing trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and turfed areas with sound cultural and chemical practices.
  • Perform work as required to maintain all athletic areas including natural grass baseball field, synthetic turf softball and soccer fields and challenge course.
  • Perform work as required to remove snow and ice from stairs, walks, drives and parking lots.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repair work on all ground's equipment.
  • Design and lead various landscape repair, renovation, and installation projects.
  • Maintains a commitment to the college mission, vision, and values.
  • Other duties as defined by department, college, or officials.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of standard landscape maintenance and management practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of materials, practices and equipment used in athletic field maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of calibration of fertilizer spreaders and sprayers for soil nutrients and pesticide application and specialized grounds equipment
  • Knowledge of repair, servicing, and maintenance techniques for all grounds equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Ability to identify common trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, weeds, and insect and disease problems.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance and to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and knowledge of Wisconsin driving laws and motor vehicle operation procedures.
  • Ability to exercise a strong sense of priority and time management, record keeping and making reports.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a crew.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate Degree or equivalent working experience. *Experience used as an equivalent of an educational requirement is in addition to any experience required by the position.
  • Two (2) years of work experience directly related to the skills required for successfully performing the duties of this position.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain a Wisconsin pesticide applicators certification, turf, and landscape 3.0 within 6 months of hire.
