The Environmental Supervisor administers the company's comprehensive environmental plan at assigned location for compliance with appropriate regulations and Duncan approved policies and procedures. This position oversees the handling and disposal of hazardous material and wastes and wastewater treatment operations, and provides leadership to assigned team members. The Environmental Supervisor partners with other locations to ensure cross-location equitability and compliance; serves as a liaison with environmental consultants and regulatory agencies for the company; participates in the development of the annual department budget and strategic plan; represents the department at company meetings and projects; and initiates and completes special projects needed for continuous departmental improvements and meeting departmental goals.

Essential Job Functions

1. Administers the Company's comprehensive plan for handling environmental issues and coordinating with respective regulatory agencies (i.e. DEQ, EPA and other state, county and local governmental agencies) at assigned location for compliance with appropriate regulations and Duncan approved policies and procedures. Partners with other locations to ensure cross-location equitability and compliance; and serves as a liaison with environmental consultants and regulatory agencies for the company.

2. Oversees operation and compliance of company's waste water facility for assigned location. Ensures compliance with all rules and regulations relative to industrial waste water facilities. Communicates operating rules and regulations to waste water team members, and recommends and ensures proper training is conducted. Ensures required testing is accomplished, requisite actions are taken and reports are compiled and submitted.

3. Monitors and directs handling of disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials and waste streams. Ensures compliance with all rules and regulations for handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste, by performing internal audits. Monitors and reports departmental inventory of hazardous chemicals and reviews labeling of drums for proper transportation and/or disposal. Responds to chemical spills/releases, provides technical assistance and recommends corrective actions. Identifies, researches and evaluates non-hazardous chemicals, to use in lieu of hazardous materials resulting in a reduction of hazardous wastes and air emissions.

4. Prepares reports and gathers information for the company's environmental consulting firm to prepare reports, and submits reports for regulatory compliance in a timely manner to EPA, LLCHD, NFPA, local water treatment facilities, state regulatory agencies, etc.

5. Participates in hiring and selection process for team members. Promotes growth and development of assigned team members to promote team cohesiveness and trust by monitoring and evaluating team members' performance in a professional, positive, accurate and timely manner. Recommends training needs and programs to the department management, and identifies and recommends technical and non-technical training opportunities for team members. Participates in personal and leadership development opportunities, and demonstrates leadership and professionalism at all times.

6. Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Job Specific Requirements

  • Licenses/Certificates: 40-Hour and Recurrent Hazardous Waste Operator Training; Initial and Recurrent Confined Space Certification; 49CFR US Hazardous Materials Transportation Regulations; Industrial Storm Water Operator (MI only); valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record; respirator fit qualified
  • Attendance: Regularly scheduled attendance required; on-call 24/7
  • Physical: Routinely lifts 50 lbs., occasionally lifts 100 lbs.; reads small print; hears sounds associated with mechanical deficiencies; repetitive motion; works with moving parts and vibration; works in confined spaces; works in heights above four feet; tolerates products and materials associated with general maintenance; tolerates standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, climbing and sitting
  • Environmental: Tolerates working in extreme temperatures and noisy environments

Education and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • Two years previous hazardous waste/material handling, environmental regulatory compliance and or wastewater treatment operations, or related experience required
