General Summary of Position

Job Summary:

Manages day to day operations of the Clinical Engineering department, under the general oversight of the Director or Vice President of Clinical Engineering. Performs duties of a Biomed Technician as necessary.


Primary Duties:

1.Develops department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures compliance with business unit policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.

2.Develops and recommends department operating budget and manages resources according to approved budget.

3.Selects, trains, orients, and assigns department staff. Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information.

4.Manages day to day operations of the Clinical Engineering department within assigned site(s) and region, under the general oversight of the Director or Vice President of Clinical Engineering. In the absence of the Director and/or VP of Clinical Engineering, handles day-to-day management decisions in the department.

5. Assists with planning, evaluating, reviewing, and recommending purchase and technical design proposals for related equipment acquisition. Provides guidance and consultation to senior administration and medical staff regarding technology assessment, utilization, and acquisition.

6.Produces comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analyses of all department functions. Gathers data and maintains appropriate documentation. Submits analytical reports and recommendations to appropriate personnel, on a periodic or as needed basis.

7.Participates in incident investigation and reporting related to equipment failures, or patient safety concerns providing data from multiple managed systems. Participates on Clinical teams and initiatives related to patient safety and complex technologies to define cause, make recommendations, and initiate corrective action as needed. Participates in the Environment of Care Committee, helps in identifying risks, completing associated objectives, performance measures, management plans and annual evaluations for medical equipment.

8.Performs personnel leadership and management functions for the designated area to include but not limited to interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, coaching, counseling, evaluating, and terminating employees as delegated by the Director and/or VP of Clinical Engineering, to optimize efficiency and effectiveness of department operations. May conduct performance evaluations, establish standards of performance, and ensures adherence.

9.Coordinates new projects and medical equipment installations. Assists in identifying scope, providing estimates for work requirements and cost working with blueprints, schematics, sketches, and team members where needed. Provides leadership for the team to enhance process and meet specific goals on projects/construction designated by the senior leadership team.

10.Helps establish and maintain clinical equipment related vendor relationships. Assists in ensuring vendor/contract compliance with terms and conditions of agreements and MedStar Health standards. When necessary, reviews and authorizes all payments to vendors and maintains fiscal control over departmental expenditures. Assists in reviewing all contracts related to clinical equipment and related technologies, makes detailed assessment, and provides recommendations to the Director and/or VP of Clinical Engineering and necessary department and senior administration.

11. Assists with monitoring, updating, and coordinating the accuracy and completeness of the Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS); to ensure integrity and established policies are followed.

12.These responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this position and is not to be considered as all inclusive. Other duties and responsibilities may also be assigned by the executive leadership team to ensure site or region needs are fulfilled.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree required.
  • Must be actively pursuing associate degree required.
  • 3-4 years 3 years of progressively more responsible job-related or management experience. Required.
  • CBET - Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician CHTM or CBET Upon Hire required.
  • Must be actively pursuing and obtain CHTM or CBET within 2 years required.
