Job Description

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for programmatic consultation (ESA) specialists to support the Pacific Island Regional Office (PIRO) Protected Resources Division (PRD). The PRD is dedicated to protecting and recovering endangered species such as sea turtles, monk seals, cetaceans, corals, and other species in the Pacific Islands Region as mandated by the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).

Primary Function:

AIS is looking for programmatic consultation specialists for an upcoming project we are looking to bid on. Lalo, or French Frigate Shoals, is a partially submerged atoll 500 miles northwest of Honolulu in Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Lalo is key nesting and birthing site for two iconic endangered species, the honu (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle) and the Hawaiian Monk Seal. Climate change is effecting this island through sea level rise, erosion and increased higher intensity storms. The Lalo Resiliency Action Plan was developed in order to preserve this important habitat. Support is needed to perform the ESA related activities listed below.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Incorporate areas designated or considered for critical habitat designation into Lalo management actions.
  • Assist PIRO in completing recovery actions for ESA-listed species and their habitat at Lalo and connected areas.
  • Conduct community outreach with the Native Hawaiian community to ensure indigenous perspectives are considered in all management and adaptation strategies being implemented for Lalo. Engage and solicit feedback from the Native Hawaiian community through interviews, forums, workshops, and the development of targeted outreach materials.
  • Support outreach efforts to communicate and implement actions identified in the Lalo Resiliency Action Plan.
  • Presentations to key stakeholders; support PIRO in representing the Lalo project at public forums and conferences; development of documents, graphic design, and materials highlighting the Lalo Resiliency Action Plan and implementing actions supporting Lalo conservation and management.
  • Coordinate with the NOAA Fisheries Project Lead and partners to implement the Management Adaptations Best Practices that consider the impacts of climate change on protected resources that can be applied in the Pacific Islands Region.

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' depth of experience. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
