Position Summary

Leadership of The Salvation Army's fund development efforts in Orange County, including major gifts, foundations /grants, corporate relationships, planned to give, direct mail, marketing, community relations and special events. This position works in collaboration with the Southern California Development Director and Territorial Headquarters Development Director to achieve the goals of Salvation Army operations in Orange County.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  5. To develop appropriate relationships and maintain appropriate relationship boundaries with other Salvation Army associates, guests, members, volunteers, partners and vendors.
  6. To communicate in an appropriate, professional, responsive and supportive manner.
  • Effective interpersonal and electronic communication is essential for mission and purpose.
  • Interpersonal communication for day-to-day operational needs is preferred.
  • Direct, thoughtful communication for the resolution of questions or conflicts is expected.
  • Electronic communication - email, texts, etc. - is official communication; and supports and confirms interpersonal communication.
  • Deference to and public support of group decisions and other's scope of expertise, position and responsibilities must be maintained.

Some agreements, ideas, processes, or other forms of sensitive information are revealed to certain individuals who are in positions of responsibility or are in possession of qualities or skills that make it necessary for them to know such confidential matters. Such information must be maintained in confidence.

  1. To complete annual, advanced managerial training to include, but not limited to: Protecting the Mission, Sexual Harassment, and others as determined.
  2. To positively guide and guard all Salvation Army resources - people, program, property and finances - toward the fulfillment of mission and purpose, and within the guidelines established by law, policy and procedure.

Specific Duties:

  1. The DD will be responsible for leading Orange County (OC) development activities and delivering the target goal via activities including direct mail campaigns, corporate partnerships, special fund-raising programs (including Christmas), event organization and execution, community relations, and donor identification, cultivation and management.
  2. Lead the development of, gain agreement to, and implement the OC development strategy and budget.
  3. Build local awareness of Salvation Army activities in Orange County utilizing all marketing tools, including direct mail, email, social media, and events and leverage that awareness to increase donations.
  4. Connect campaign donors with The Salvation Army and cultivate increased giving through sustained relationships.
  5. Create and implement cause-marketing partnerships with appropriate corporations.
  6. Arrange for meetings between donors and appropriate Salvation Army leaders to establish relationships and lay the groundwork for the solicitation of major gifts.
  1. Work with the Divisional Secretary to facilitate all dimensions of the Advisory Board, with specific emphasis on developing and cultivating board membership, retention and giving. Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Advisory Board's Nominating and Development Committees.
  2. Attend regularly scheduled meetings (at OC and DHQ), and initiate meetings with appropriate staff, for the purpose of cooperation and communication.
  3. Understand and promote all categories of Salvation Army service.
  4. Work cooperatively with the Divisional Development Department to ensure an integrated approach to all donors. Communicate with the Divisional Director of Development and Planned Giving Director referring and receiving appropriate donor information
  5. Be knowledgeable of and follow Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  6. Prepare and submit monthly reports outlining progress.
  7. In cooperation with OC leadership, Corps Officers, and programs directors, and in collaboration with DHQ grant writers, provide coordination and reporting of grant management to include the last three years history of all grants to OC, and ability to articulate the current year's plan.
  8. On a weekly basis ensure that donor database maintenance, donor contact information, donor gift acknowledgement and recognition, gift stewardship, and accounting procedures are done thoroughly and in a timely fashion. This includes, but is not limited to, relevant data input in the 'notes' section of the donor software system.

PAY RATE: $145k-$170k

Minimum Qualifications

  • By virtue of its direct contact with, and representation to people who engage in Salvation Army programs, people who demonstrate an understanding of The Salvation Army's Christian mission are required for this position
  • BA/BS in related field, plus ten years of development and supervisory experience required. MA preferred.
  • Have successful experience in supervising and managing a professional staff and volunteers.
  • Must demonstrate competence with computer platforms and software, specifically MS Office.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Meet all health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department as well as The Salvation Army.
  • Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting the demand of the position.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Driving Test and clean MVR check (if applicable).
  • If working in vicinity of children a criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
  • Must have ability to work with, direct, and relate well with co-workers, community members, and guests/clients.
  • Able to function in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
