THE POSITION

The Department of Human Services, Polk State Center is seeking a motivated and reliable Utility Plant Operator 1 to manage the central steam generating plant, which supplies steam heat and hot water to all residential buildings and support services. This position is part of the Polk Center stay-behind maintenance team and will remain operational after the facility closure.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Utility Plant Operator 1, you will be responsible for firing three coal-fired and 1 natural gas-fired, 600HP boilers, generating approximately 175,000,000 pounds of steam at 180 P.S.I. and consuming approximately 9,500 tons of coal per year. Using the Honeywell UDC Computer and manual control methods, you will observe fire-beds for density, depth, and consistency of ashes, and makes necessary adjustments and corrections to the fuel-air ratio and coal consumption to facilitate improved operational efficiency of the plant. You will record the shift's usage of fuel and raw water and log this information for use in computing reports and for reference purposes. Emphasis is placed on the accuracy of the various firing procedures so that steam production will be guaranteed to supportive functions that depend on uninterrupted service to effectively support laundry production, food service production, comfortable living quarters, household use, and bathing purposes.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours/week.
  • Hours of work are 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM, 2:30 PM to 10:30 PM, or 10:30 PM to 6:30 AM. Weekends, holidays, and patterns and variable shifts as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Six months of experience as a Utility Plant Helper (commonwealth title); or
  • Six months of unskilled work experience assisting in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment, electronic equipment, electrical systems, heavy machinery, motors, engines, drives or hydraulic systems; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
