Job Description

Mott MacDonald's California offices are looking for project engineers specializing in civil design, water, wastewater, urban stormwater management, and water infrastructure design to join our team. In this role you will complete hydrologic investigations and site analyses, prepare complete civil infrastructure design packages, provide construction cost estimates and constructability reviews, provide construction engineering support and work with multi-faceted team members for various water infrastructure and water resources projects throughout California.

This position can sit in any of our California offices including San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles.

Requisite Skills and a learning mindset include:

  • Hydrological Modeling: Proficiency in utilizing software such as HEC-HMS, SWMM, or similar tools for hydrological modeling and analysis.
  • Water Quality Management: Knowledge and experience in water quality modeling, pollutant transport analysis, and implementing water quality improvement measures.
  • Civil Design software proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley Civil 3D, StormCAD and other requisite software.
  • GIS and Spatial Analysis: Ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis, data management, and mapping related to water resource projects.
  • Sustainable Design: Familiarity with sustainable design principles and practices in water resources engineering, including green infrastructure and low-impact development techniques.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Understanding of federal, state, and local regulations related to water resources, including permits, environmental impact assessments, and compliance reporting.
  • Community Engagement: Experience in stakeholder engagement, public outreach, and communication related to water resource projects, including conducting public meetings and addressing community concerns.
  • Project Management: Skills in project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource management, including experience with project management software.


Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct planning studies, and feasibility studies for water, wastewater and stormwater conveyance, treatment infrastructure projects, linear transportation projects, and other civil infrastructure projects.
  • Use water quality management knowledge along with federal, state, local regulatory knowledge to lead efforts to secure necessary permits and approvals for projects and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements throughout project implementation.
  • Explore and propose innovative solutions to address complex project challenges incorporating emerging technologies and best practices into project proposals and designs.
  • Support business development efforts completing cost estimates and writing engineering proposals for potential projects.
  • Conduct hydrological modeling using HEC-HMS, SWMM or similar tools, engineering hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, and calculations for drainage assessment, preform pipe network flow analysis, and other complex engineering calculations to support water resource, water treatment, linear transportation design and construction projects.
  • Complete design engineering drawings, plans and specifications for new and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, lift stations, pump houses, conveyance systems, transportation facilities and other civil engineering tasks for infrastructure projects.
  • Provide construction engineering support services including design submittal reviews, request for information (RFI) responses and site development management.
  • Provide site oversight, safety management, scope control, quality control, construction documentation, clarification of design, cost-overrun documentation, schedule control, project management and reporting.
  • Work under supervision of a senior project manager/responsible engineer in charge.
  • Supervise junior engineers and staff on project teams.
  • Assist with subcontractor and client relationships.

The ideal candidate will have the following experience:

  • BS degree in civil or environmental, engineering
  • 5 to 10 years' experience in safety management, planning, design, and/or construction management of water, wastewater, and/or stormwater infrastructure projects.
  • CA PE required or ability to get within 6 months.
  • PMP and DBIA certification desirable.

Salary Range: $87,000- $130,000
