The OVPRI includes several key support areas. This role is situated within the Finance & Budget team, which is inclusive of the Research & Innovation Post Award Team (RePAT). The fundamental mission of R&I Finance is to provide leadership in budgeting and financial reporting for research centers and administrative units within R&I, as well as to compile the Annual Research Expenditure Report (ARE) and contribute to various initiatives in collaboration with the Office of University Controller (OUC). RePAT's primary purpose is to provide comprehensive financial support and subject matter expert. RePAT serves as a financial resource for large, complex multi-disciplinary sponsored awards, as well as supports select requests for campus units that would otherwise not have such support. By design, support is available to manage related administrative and financial matters associated with a faculty member's research portfolio, so that the faculty member may focus on the technical and academic content.


What You Will Do

Under the supervision on the Sr. Director of Finance & Budget for Research & Innovation (R&I), general accounting responsibilities include, but not limited to, supporting the supervising Sr. Director with analytical responsibilities related to various Division of Financial Services (DFS) initiatives, Annual Operating Unit Internal Control Certification (OUICC), Internal Controls, Annual Certification(s), Effort Certification(s), account reconciliations, R&I endowment tracking/analysis, year-over-year variance reporting/analysis by R&I unit, Kuali Financial System (KFS) org and account maintenance, reconciliations, adhoc reporting requests and special financial projects as they arise.


Collaborate with the Budget and Reporting Manager and Budget and Reporting Specialist to develop and provide support for the Annual Operating Budget, utilizing the Longview Budget System.


This position contributes to the development, configuration, and enhancement of procedures that support inclusive and diverse teams with varied goals and objectives; ultimately impacting and influencing unit business decisions in a positive way. Requires significant accuracy, attention to detail, and the development of an understanding of the interrelationship between the university's general ledger and organizational structure.


Demonstrate a high level of organizational skills that prioritize efficiency, accuracy, and practicality across all organization processes and procedures and use sound ethical judgment and critical time management skills to accomplish tasks that are urgent, highly sensitive and/or confidential in nature exercising critical thinking and creative problem-solving techniques to advance work efficiently and effectively.


This position develops and maintains professional working relationships with other Cornell departments. This includes, but is not limited to, the Division of Financial Services, the Division of Planning and Budget, and the University Shared Service Center (SSC).

Associate degree in business, finance, accounting, or other related field or equivalent combination of education and experience; at least 3 years but less than 5 years of experience within general. Highly developed accounting analytical and reporting skills, which includes demonstrated experience utilizing spreadsheets and databases (Excel), as well as complex data applications and delivery systems (Kuali dashboards, RASS, applications, and queries, Workday, etc.). Ability to utilize Microsoft Office tools. Demonstrated skillset includes providing strong customer service and communication abilities. Accuracy, attention to detail, analytical, time management, problem-solving, flexibility and organizational skills. Work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced, customer-oriented, team environment. Organize, plan, and prioritize multiple competing work activities under pressure. Maintain confidential information stored on the shared drive and/or communicated directly with discretion. Positive team attitude and professionalism. Embrace change and challenges. Functional with sponsored (e.g. pre/post award) financial information.

What We Prefer

Additionally, we would like to see evidence of:


Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, or another related field. Advanced excel proficiency (e.g. pivot tables, VLookups, etc.). Functional in University systems, including Longview Budget System, KFS, OBIEE Dashboards and Answers. Highly proficient in reporting and extracting data from systems. Demonstrated experience using reasoning skills and sound judgment in the identification and investigation of complexities, trends, and variances. Familiar with Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs and sponsored (e.g. pre/post award) financial information. Accounting Certification Program. Knowledge of Cornell policies, procedures, and programs.

The New York Convenience of Employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position.
