Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The Office of Research Compliance and Technology Transfer plays a critical role in supporting and strengthening a culture of compliance and innovation in research at NCCU. The Office is responsible for assuring the regulatory compliance of NCCU's research enterprise. Covered areas include: RCR, export controls, animal care and use, human subjects protections, FCOI, intellectual property/technology transfer, research misconduct, radiation & chemical safety (in collaboration with OHS) and aspects of grants management (in collaboration with OSRP). |

Primary Purpose of Position | The Research Compliance Coordinator (RCC) will report directly to the Director, Office of Research Compliance and Technology Transfer. The RCC will serve as the primary liaison between the University's Institutional Review Board (IRB) and principal investigators (faculty, staff and students) engaging in human subjects research. The RCC will assist faculty, staff, and students in understanding and fulfilling federal requirements for research with human subjects. The RCC will also provide administrative back-office support to the University's Institutional Animal Care and Use and Committee (IACUC). |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | Demonstrate exceptional written and verbal skills, as well as strong problem solving, time management (ability to keep multiple tasks on schedule) and decision making skills. *Ability to interpret and apply federal laws and regulations regarding the protection of animals and human subjects. *Ability to counsel and advise on matters of general research compliance and ethical practices regarding animals and human subjects in research. *High level of experience and comfort working with senior leadership, staff, team members, students and external organizations. *Proficient in relevant computer programs *Ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously and to effectively prioritize tasks and duties. *Possess discretion and mature judgment in dealing with confidential information |

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. | Maintain current knowledge of federal and state regulations and best practices regarding human and animal subjects' protections. Assist faculty, staff, and students (investigators) with the preparation of IRB applications, forms, and related documents in accordance with federal regulations. Provide clear, consistent guidance to investigators throughout the IRB review process (initial submission, renewal, modification, unanticipated/adverse events, close-out). Review and administratively approve research that meets the federal criteria for exemption, non human research determination, class project exemption and site authorizations. Distribute IRB protocols to board reviewers with appropriate expertise and ability to review proposed research under expedited review procedures as defined in federal regulations. |

Assist IRB or IACUC Chairs and the Director with responses to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Provide assistance to the Director with the AAALAC reaccreditation site visit scheduled triennially during the month of July and positioning NCCU's human research protections program to enter into the accreditation process with AAHRPP. |
