Job Summary

Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Works with community based organizations to develop and execute diverse research projects with concise focus. Develops survey instruments in multiple platforms (eg. Google forms, RedCAP) to collect data related to community engaged projects. Analysis of data from relevant collection tools. Creates simple graphic depictions of data such as tables, pie graphs, bar charts under instruction from supervisor and more senior team members. Opportunities to publish peer reviewed work focused on health equity, cancer care, cancer disparities and interventions to address cancer and other disparities. Works closely with the Director of the Office of Community Engagement to develop and execute community engaged and community based participatory research. Participates in ongoing community engagement working group for the NIMHD funded Health Equity Action Network. Participates in and coordinates ongoing meetings with Patient Advocates and Future Leaders for the NCI funded Cancer Grand Challenge Award PROMINENT under direction of co-investigator (Supervisor Rhoads). Participates in meetings related to Umoja Health planning events, managing related data collection and graphic depiction as indicated.

Department Description

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (DEB), housed within the UCSF School of Medicine, is the largest department of epidemiology in the University of California system. The DEB is the epicentre of many of UCSF's initiatives in population health, data science and informatics, health service research, health equity and artificial intelligence. The DEB has three missions: 1) education, 2) science, and 3) research. Its educational mission is to train students in epidemiologic and biostatistical methods for studying disease etiology and prevention, evaluating tests and treatments, and using evidence-based approaches in clinical practice and population health. The scientific mission of the DEB is to perform outstanding basic, clinical and population health research along a spectrum from molecules to society and to develop tools for the translation of knowledge that will improve clinical practice and population health and ensure optimal use of resources. The clinical mission of the Department is to support the practice of public health and preventive medicine in local, state, national and international health agencies.

Dr. Kim Rhoads serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics as well as the senior leader (Associate Director) in the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) for Community Engagement and the director of the Office of Community Engagement for the Cancer Center. Rhoads serves as MPI and Co-investigator on numerous cancer related and chronic disease focused large scale federally funded awards. She also serves as the founding director of Umoja Health, a community centered coalition working to achieve health equity in collaboration with multi-sectoral stakeholders that include public health departments, community and faith based partners, local clinics and health systems. Umoja Health also hosts Youth Mobilizers and Summer Interns. The framework for community partnerships across all of these projects is centered in the Rhoads Equity in Action Lab (the REAL).

The HDFCCC Office of Community Engagement is charged with facilitating community based and community engaged research. Staff in the office support cancer center investigators in their efforts to build community advisory boards to guide research strategy. The office also hosts the nearly two decade old community advisory board (CAB) including regular quarterly meetings, public cancer information offerings and steering committee activities. The mission of the OCE is to SUPPORT community engagement across the catchment area with agencies and cancer advocates; to FACILITATE equitable community academic PARTNERSHIPS for research and cancer education; and to DISSEMINATE relevant cancer information to communities and new interventions for cancer prevention and control to providers taking care of the underserved across the Greater Bay Area. OCE vision is the elimination of cancer inequities that lead to cancer disparities in Northern California. The Umoja Health mission is to building community coalitions with the capacity to achieve health equity.

Data collection and management for each of the projects listed above would be core components of the incumbent's position.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 1+ years of directly relevant experience.
  • >6 months experience working with community-based organizations.
  • Working knowledge of research function.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in delivery of research products (power point presentations with graphical data depiction; poster production; assistance with grants-editing; preparatory research)
  • Good interpersonal skills for work with academic faculty and community researchers
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to track research projects and ensure timely completion of tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures.
  • Working skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Attention to detail.
